Veteran's Story: Joe Andrews

Meet Joe Andrews, a U.S. Army Veteran who proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Joe's journey reflects both sacrifice and strength of our military heroes.

Thanks to the team at Purple Heart Homes, Joe now lives in a healthier and more comfortable space - one that honors his service and supports his well-being.

A Life of Service

Joe Andrews was born in 1941 in Ramseur, N.C., and like so many in his generation, he answered the call to serve during a pivotal time in American History. He joined the United States Army and served from 1967 to 1969, including time spent in Vietnam, where he was wounded in the line of duty.

Joe earned the rank of SP4 before being honorably discharged. His service and skill earned him several military distinctions including: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Sharpshooter Badge for the M-14 Rifle.

Today, Joe continues to honor his fellow Veterans as a proud member of the Randolph County Honor Guard.

A Daily Battle at Home

Though his military service ended decades ago, the toll of war has never truly left Joe's body. He lives with multiple chronic health conditions - nerve pain, neuropathy, hypertension, arthritis and diabetes - many of which are compounded by his wartime injury.

Over the years, carpet throughout his home became a source of constant discomfort, trapping dust and allergens that made breathing and resting difficult. On top of that, Joe's HVAC unit frequently broke down, especially during the temperatures of North Carolina's summers and winters - putting his health and safety at risk.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

When Purple Heart Homes learned of Joe's situation, they knew immediate action was needed to restore comfort to his living space.

With support from The Home Depot Foundation, a North Carolina grant and our dedicated project team, we addressed Joe's most urgent needs.

Floor replacement, eliminating dust and allergens for a cleaner, healthier living environment and installation of new HVAC system, providing year-round heating and cooling.

Our Mission in Action

At Purple Heart Homes, we believe every Veteran deserves to live in a safe, accessible and healthy home.

Projects like Joe's are made possible through meaningful partnerships and the generosity of others. Special thanks to The Home Depot Foundation and the North Carolina grant program for helping bring this vision to life.

You can help make more stories like Joe's possible. Volunteer, donate or spread the word - because no Veteran should be left behind.
